Who was Sam Manekshaw? Know the hero ahead of the release of Vicky Kaushal starrer ‘Sam Bahadur’

Widely considered as the main reason behind India winning the war, Sam Manekshaw is among the news again in light of a movie being made on him. Titled Sam Bahadur, the movie stars Vicky Kaushal essaying the role of Field Marshal Sam Bahadur. Ahead of the movie’s release on 1st December, let’s take a look at the highly decorated hero.

Who was Sam Manekshaw?

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, also known as Sam Bahadur (“Sam the Brave”), served as the Chief of the Indian Army during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. He is the first Indian Army officer to reach the rank of Field Marshal.

He was born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, Punjab, in British India. Manekshaw started his military career in 1932 in the British Indian Army. He did really well during World War II and helped bring together the Indian and Pakistani Armies after the war ended.

Ascending to the position of Chief of the Army Staff in 1969, Manekshaw spearheaded efforts to modernize and prepare the Indian Army for potential hostilities with Pakistan. In 1971, India engaged in war with Pakistan to support the liberation movement in East Pakistan, which culminated in the birth of Bangladesh. Manekshaw’s leadership steered the Indian Army to a resounding victory.

Sam Manekshaw Honours

Renowned for his bravery, tactical acumen, and wit, Manekshaw received accolades such as the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and the Military Cross. He also earned the distinction of being the inaugural Indian Army officer to attain the rank of field marshal.

People admired Manekshaw for his bravery, smart thinking, and sense of humor. He strongly believed in fairness and democracy in India. In India, he is celebrated for his guidance and leadership during the 1971 conflict.

On-Screen Adaptation

Vicky Kaushal will portray Sam Manekshaw in a movie called “Sam Bahadur.” The movie, directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, will focus on Manekshaw’s life and his important role in the 1971 war. It’s set to release worldwide in theaters on December 1, 2023.
